Chille Eartthquakes

Here's a great site to see real data regards earthquakes instead of what the 18 year old on the news desk gives you.

That link should be zeroed in on the Chille quakes. I've been using this site for a long time, and I've never seen a set of quakes like this. The big blue square fairly centered in the group shows an M8.8. Man, that's a big quake. For anyone that doesn't know, a 6.o is a big quake. A 7 is not 1 point larger than a 6, it is 10 times a 6. Therefore an 8, being 10 times a 7 is 100 times as powerful as a 6.0. Being this was 8.8, that would be about 1000 times as powerful as a 6.0. Unimaginable.

Any quakes in red mean that they just happened within the hour. I would imagine there will be a lot of aftershocks.

  5. Snarky, that is a cool site. I started looking at it years ago, and the first thing that impressed me was the number of quakes around the globe everyday. Seems like 6 or 7 on an average boring day, but people reliant on the 'news' might hear about one every 8 months or so.

I always enjoy comparing reality to perception.

Also, isn't it interesting that since the Tsunami, everytime there is an Earthquake, unless it's in Ohio, there's always the Tsunami watch. IT takes a very special quake to cause a Tsunami. It needs one that either severely raises or drops the sea floor. Those are pretty rare actually.
