As a mom, I have to say that Li'l Steve is making me very nervous with this stunt. I think he's a little young to be in the family business. Aren't they rich enough?
Cube, did you watch the vid? Charlie Parker the saxaphonist came to mind immediately for me too. I don't know that this Charlie's family is rich. Was there something in the vid? But yea, he's playing with all the dangerous critters. I put on a google alert to keep track of him. If he stays alive, I think we'll see him on the Tele one day.
No, I didn't watch the video because I don't like seeing little kids doing this kind of thing. I assumed this was Steve Irwin's son and there would be some obscure connection between him and Charlie Parker, the saxophonist.
I still haven't watched the video, but I did read the story. I still don't approve of the way these parents are raising their child, but it's their child and not mine.
I find this story a bit disturbing, but as someone who thinks that parents should be allowed to raise their children without government interference, I can accept whatever eventually happens to this lad. That issue aside, I think his parents are idiots. A child of his age lacks the ability to make sound decisions based on reason; he is incapable of seeing the likely consequences of his actions. He is prone to fantasy and a kid his age is just as likely to place a towel around his neck and jump off a roof with the expectation that he can fly —like Superman. You may as well put him behind the driver’s seat of a very large truck filled with propane gas.
Now, each time he feeds that alligator, whose focus is the chicken at the end of the stick, the child is reinforced in his belief that alligators and crocodiles are fun and that he’s formed a “good relationship” with these reptiles. In my view, this is a core fallacy leading up to major fail.
As for Mr. Irwin, he took unacceptable risks ... which, given what happened to him, leads me to question his intellectual maturity as well. He is not someone I would want my children to idolize and follow.
Sam I agree. We dont know what knowledge the kid has though or more importantly how he may be protected from off camera ? Regardless 8 is too young to be playing with 500 lb crocs and gators. Irwin certainly knew what he was doing until he went into a new environment and met up with the sting ray. I would not want my kid doing this either but if that was a passion. Id say being a Marine is more dangerous although concede the different goals.
Charlie Parker was my Idle when I was a squirt. I also played the Alto Sax and trust me when I say that I followed the "Bird" wherever and whenever he was in town (New York).
I'm sure lots of people miss Charlie Parker too.

DeleteAnother example of poor parenting skills here.
He's well known I hear.

Fair enough Cube. I just wanted to clarify. I hope we don't get bad news about the kid.
DeleteI'll watch the li'l tyke's tv show. I love that stuff. as long as he becomes another Steve Irwin and not a Crocodile Dundee.
ReplyDeleteItll be a while before hes on TV if ever. Says he wants to be a zoo keeper but who knows. Lots of time to sort that out.

ReplyDeleteHey Frank, I only found out about him after he was gone. The "boy could play" as that Dire Straits tune 'Walk of Life' goes .
