Remember

Day is done, gone the sun,
From the hills, from the lake,
From the skies.
All is well, safely rest,
God is nigh

Update: I just put this in the comments, but I think it belongs here too.

  1. I was on the deck of the USS Midway in San Diego today for a remembrance ceremony. A survivor from Pearl Harbor, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghan wars were on hand with the SEAL Team 7. The tossed wreaths off the ship. And of course, "Butterfield's Lullaby". Misty eyes all around.

    1. Correcting the comment..

KP, I wish I'd have been there. My wife's daughter is a Petty Officer, 1st, and works in medical. fwiw.

That reminds me, I recently found out, though it may be common knowledge, that many (or all?) of the surviving shipmates of the USS Arizona have themselves interred aboard the ship.

Here is a video describing the ceremony

    2. That is very intertesting indeed about the burials. I understand that.

On the Midway, there was an incredibly complimentary ode to the medic that was read to open the remembrance by one of the crustiest Marines I have seen recently. He was ancient but his voiced boomed. I am sorry to him that I cannot recall his name. He is well known in San Diego. Keep up the good work, mate!

    3. KP, Every time I've seen or heard a soldier of any stature mention a corpsman, it is always something like "God Bless a Corpsman !".
Seriously, they go in pretty much unarmed because the only thing task they have is to protect and rescue the injured. You could easily argue that these folks are the cream.

  7. Terrific Memorial Day post, Kid, thanks for this.
That USS Arizona survivors are interred there is very moving.
I love that Reagan quote above...thanks for that, Sidbirt.
God bless all of our military and their families....from the beginning.

    1. Z, Reagan quotes. It seems there are too many to count. All wonderful. A genuine man who had his finger on the pulse of reality more than many of us will ever know. Imagine calling Russia the Evil Empire while you're sitting in the White House ! That must have tightened Liberal Sphincters to the point you couldn't drive a nail up with a sledge hammer! I Love it !

The subject of the USS Arizona and it's survivors was introduced to me very recently, and I hadn't ever thought about it, but it's perfectly understandable and interesting. Yes, be with your mates, or in Arlington. Though I can see some making the decision to be near where their families can visit.

And the military families, mostly mothers at home taking care of everything until Dad gets back home is no trivial matter. So much good work being done.
