In 1997, A Land Vehicle Exceeded the Speed of Sound

and currently holds the land speed record.

Pretty impressive stuff.

The Spirit of America was able to manage 675 and crash in 1996, then come back and do 676. The vehicle was built from an F-104 Starfighter Aircraft, which was the first fighter back in the 1960's to exceed mach 2. In flight, it was known as "a man in a missile". I think some other names included the word coffin.

Here's a picture of the Spirit of America as it was in 1997.

If you're interested, there is a bunch of stuff out there on the Thrust SSC. Google of course.

  1. omg i've never heard of that. and i get scared with hubby in the ole camaro and say "slow down! what if a deer ran out?" in this case the deer would be vaporized and it wouldn't miss a beat.

  2. Sorry but I think KIM Jong IL holds that record while driving his 1963 Dodge Polara 500 Convertible (with the Max Wedge Ramcharger) through downtown Dallas near the Dallas School Book Depository Building.
