Pilots would call that a "sucker hole". Looking for a path out of a storm or bad weather, you look up and see that patch of blue, fly through it and it's worse on that side cause it's an illusion caused by water vapor.
Imp, If I were a pilot, I'd hope it was an F-16 pilot and when bad weather is encountered, I could just go vertical and be above it all in a few seconds.
That they are Z, and that's all they need to be for many of us. I consider federal money spent on telescopes as money well spent, especially in contrast to where most of it goes.
BEAUTY, indeed! But even more compelling is the aura of MYSTERY that comes with all these images from Outer Space. The gap between what they LOOK LIKE to our wondering, ill-informed eyes, and what they really ARE is so enormous as to be unfathomable.
Looking at the I feel as though I am inside but within sight of the entrance to an enormous dark cavern. Looking at the entrance to the outside world, I see a bright blue sky filled with wispy white clouds.
It looks inviting, BUT the question arises, if I leave the cave will I land on solid ground in a meadow, a pasture, or on a hillside? Or will I emerge from the darkness only to go into freefall with no land in sight?

DeleteAmazing how much we don't know about the universe!
ReplyDeleteAOW, True. Even more amazing to me is knowing what a violent and inhospitable place the universe is, yet here we are - blissfully unaware.
