  1. Somewhere over the rainbow
    Way up high
There's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby

    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
    Away above the chimney tops
    That's where you'll find me

    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Blue birds fly
    Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then oh why can't I?

If happy little blue birds fly beyond the rainbow
    Why oh why can't I?

    1. Z, there is a story that these lyrics were written abut the Jews being incinerated in Germany in the Holocaust. The movie came out in 1939 though and I don't think that was happening yet though some sources say the Holocaust began in 1939. Possible I guess, but I wonder how songwriters would have known about the event when even most Germans didn't know until after 1945.

  2. Those are the Judy Garland lyrics I love but there's another set of similar lyrics, too.

He really knows how to PLAY -) To say the least!

    1. Z, He makes it look easy but there is a Lot going on there between the thumb and all the fingers at work and all the little enhancement notes worked into the main melody. I couldn't figure out that harmonic at the end until I asked in comments and he or his staff responded that he lightly rested the hell of his hand on the strings at the octave (12 frets) about the chord being played. He was probably thinking Ok guys figure that one out. Chet did stuff like that too.

  3. Dude can strum. btw, is it weird that I sang those lyrics in my head using Z's beautiful voice?

    1. Mr Blade, I knew you had a beautiful voice anytime you wanted to bring it out and use it. You may want to be careful around the transgenders and millennials and anyone named Bruce or Bradley.

As an aside, Judy was definitely the gal to play this part and sing this tune.

  4. Bless you for this, Kid!

Frankly. Tommy's insightful genius captures the meaning of this almost-too-famous song better than Judy Garland did in the 1939 movie –– and for decades after till her tragic death at age FORTY SEVEN..

Almost forgotten, now –– and hardly ever performed –– is the INTRODUCTION, which I think really MAKES the siong. I find it almost unbearably touching considering what happened to Judy Garland after sh left Oz I've reconstructed it from memory as well as I could, but I' sure there are inacuracies.

When all the world is a hopeless jumble
And the raindrops tumble all around
    Heaven opens a magic lane.

When all the clouds darken up the highway
There’s a rainbow skyway made of sound ––
Bluebirds on your window pane ––

To a place behind the sun
Just a step beyond the rain
    ….

Even though Tommy didn't include this always neglected introduction, his unique phrasing, wonderful harmonies and accompaniment figurations he devised TAKE US to that magic "place behind the sun –– just a step beynd the rain."

    1. Glad you enjoyed Franco ! 47 ? Dang I did not know that. Hey, Maybe God takes the good ones early. We can sure see who is left here that seem they are never going to go away.

I did not know about that intro you posted either. Thanks for the info.

Maybe we'll meet beyond the rainbow someday.

    2. Thanks, Kid. That's a nice thought, but in a way I think we already have spent at least a little time together in that special place.

I think of it more as a state of mind than an actual physical location.

    3. That's nice of you to say Franco. Some people can make a connection with those they haven't actually met. IMP certainly had that quality, and you may also. Anyway, I enjoy reading your thoughts.

    4. IMP was a great guy –– one of the best I've ever known. His recent death is a big loss to all sane, decent, right thinking, intelligent people in the blogosphere, Kid.

I never met him in person, but he and I had a lot of respect for each other. It lasted for nearly twenty years. I hope his wife will be all right. Must be very hard for her.

      Damn Straight Franco.

Shortly after he passed I heard form his wife in email, then a couple more as IMP and I were working a minor business venture that She contacted me about as she suspected I'd sent IMP some money. I was planning to bring that up after a couple months or so had passed.

She was very clear, and calm in her emails. In the first email to a group of us she mentioned his passing was a little shock, but not unexpected by any means. He had some problems, but you would never know it conversing with him in email. Top Notch guy.

  5. I'm not really a fan of "popular music," – especially these days –– but TOMMY is in a special class all by himself.

One of THE greatest, most creative musical talents in the past hundred years.

    1. I think so Franco. He can write a tune while you wait. Just give him a subject.

    2. Hey I can do that too, Kid. Lots of musicians can, BUT whatever I did I doubt it would be as good as whatever Tommy could produce. He rally is a genius. I'm just "good."

Just like I write poetry too, but it's not as good as Shakespeare's. ;-)

  6. Progressive DisruptionsFebruary 20, 2019 at 5:56 PM

Every President since Ronald Reagan was in office agreed that the border was a severe problem or crisis and promised to take action to fix it.

this problem has festered now since at least 1986 and liberals want to pitch a fit because Trump is actually trying to fix this problem?

    1. Politicians say all sorts of things they have no intention of coming through on to get elected. Apparently Trump is the only one with that quality but he needs congress so the legislation and changes have some lasting ability. EO's are easily canceled. Democrats made invading America incredibly easy. Ted Kennedy changed legal immigration from a requirement that 90% speak English and can show a great value to America for them to come to 10% (which they probably ignored even the 10% requirement).

Republicans stood by doing nothing but masturbating with stupid looks on their faces. Repubs had Congress and the White House for the last 2 years and did jack shit about many of these problems. We should not have to be dealing with any of this crap and much more today. Useless bastards. I understand why people get pissed and stop voting for them, but the dems are pure fooking evil. The next democrat administration will be the END of America, all of it.

  7. Something some of you folks might be interested in are the moving harmonics at 3:05 and near the end.
To play a simple harmonic on a guitar, you would gently touch a string right above the 12th fret and pluck the string. What Tommy is doing is using his index finger to rest on a fret 12 frets about the string where it is being pressed down by a finger on the left hand and then plucking the string with the thumb pick. Obviously since the left hand is playing a chord using different frets, the index finger needs to move for each string to stay on the 12th fret above whatever the left fingers are depressing.
At the same time, he uses the 2nd finger to touch the fret 12 frets above a different string being used in the chord and the 3rd finger to pluck that string.

Probably only take me 35 years to build the motor skills to do that.........
