The Kitten Fostering Days

.
.

So, I'm getting closer to editing a bunch of our video from the fostering days to put together a fun cat/kitten antics video, and I put this one together to start getting familiar with my new video editing software which happens to be Corel Video Studio Pro X3.

The Mom is Suzie, the first cat we took in to foster and she was pregnant and promptly had Monique and Alphonse the same night my wife brought her home.  They're just a couple days old here.

Then a few days later, three orphaned kittens were brought to the shelter, so they were placed with us, since our Mom cat only had two and was nursing.  My wife was going on about how to rub some of the momma fur on them so she'd be more likely to accept them, as I was dropping them into the crate with Mom.  She took them in right away and began feeding and caring for them.  Those three turned out to be Little Bear, Big Bear and Grey Goose.

Anyway, the video is not real exciting but it's up on Youtube so here she blows.

  1. Hey Kid, you know DeanO simply adores cats so I loved this video. I'm always moved when watching the loving care a Mother cat gives to the kittens. I liked how she pulled them in and gave them a bath. I'm sure she's anxious for the cats to start enjoying milk from a bowl

  2. Hi DeanO, Yes, even at this stage were were supplementing Mom by doing some bottle feeding with KMR, which I think stands for Kitten Milk Replacer.

You know they don't use a litter box for a couple weeks. Mom deals with all that. If you ever find orphan kittens outside, the first thing they probably need is help with potty. Rub a warm anything on their plumbing/lower belly. They can't go any other way.

Anyway, glad you liked it. I got a whole bunch of video to go through and edit into something entertaining. It'll be a while I think.

And they all have different personalities. We had about 31 kittens go through the house into adoption.

  3. Hey Kid, our neighbors volunteer at the local Animal Shelter where no animals are put down except for extreme cause. This video makes me want to go check into what all they do. You know all our pets, save one is a rescue pet. Gracie adopted our neighbors cat and they were kind enough to give Sandy to us. Hm, come to think of it perhaps they planned this!

  4. DeanO, there were good and bad times. Of course. Mostly good though and with a no kill shelter there won't be as many bad as we had.
Even still, It was a heck of a lot of fun! Mostly enjoyable by far.
The biggest thing is you get attached to them. Wife got real nervous when I started naming them.
By the time it was done, we ended up with 13, and currently have 5.

A little reality setting in will keep you form becoming a crazy cat man though. I hope :)

My wife was a monster adopter. Checking people out making sure they got their new kitten to a vet right off and everything. I was happy with everyone who adopted from us. Most of them even sent a picture back in email of them in their new homes. Never give an animal away except to someone you know very well. (Maybe I should just make a post out of this.) People are out there looking for food for their predators..

In our case, the price was 65 and they were fixed, and had their shots. Not bad at all. The money all went to the shelter. But we were very lucky and usually got them adopted out in pairs.

It was fun. Take some video and lot's of pictures if you do.

  5. DeanO, PS, there are folks who will go to a shelter and just walk the dogs. That's a Huge help to a shelter just doing something like that.

  6. DeanO. PPS :) Most of what you need is time.

They need bottle fed right away in the morning, halfway through the day and at night. They'll sleep through the night though. And every time they get fed they need help with potty.

We had an assembly line going. Take them out of one box - feed, potty, over into another box. haha

  7. Awesome vid. You will probably get a half mill hits. People love kittens, and this, with that wonderful momma giving them attention was one of the best I have seen.

  8. Thanks Opus ! More to come.

How'd you like those kittens squirting out from under the couch. Hard to tell, but it was about a half inch off the floor. heh

  9. That was a great video. What a loving mother. When I was a kid, we had a female who never had a litter. My brother brought home a little kitty one day and our female treated him like he was her baby. He even suckled, although there was no milk. It was amazing how she had the motherly instinct without ever having babies herself.

  10. TCL. So much beauty in Motherhood. All their own.

I wouldn't want to trade genders, but I have more respect for mothers than I can verbalize.

  18. Z, some of them have such fantastic personalities. 20 is a long time. And you should always pick up two litter mates. Nothing better. ;-)

Of this group, Alphonse (ginger color) and Little Bear (solid black) are still with us. The other three left us too soon, but there are more to see and we still have a few of those. :)
