  2. Groucho was like Mae West in that he was SO outrageous, the still-inncent, naive and gullible America public did not realize how incredibly off color these two beloved entertainers really were.

I remember one time on You Bet Your life when Groucho was interviewing a man from somewhere in the Midwest who openly boasted that he and his wife already had EIGHTEEN children, and still planned to have more.

Groucho responded: Hey! I like my cigar too, but at least I take it out once in a while."

Mae West confronted a young buck in one of her movies who claimed he was 6-feet, 8-inches.

Mae replied, "Forget about the six feet, I want to know more about the eight-inches."

America was so unsophisticated back then even the CENSORS had no idea what these people were REALLY saying.

  3. I always found him funnier on this show than the movies.
I remember seeing an interview with Edith Head after she won the Oscar for The Sting.
A week later I saw her on a twenty year old re-run of You Bet Your Life and she looked exactly the same.

    1. Ed, I find them equally funny, but the ad-lib stuff is darn good.
