DeleteWay back in elementary school we used to sing from The Golden Book of Favorite Songs –– pretty corny stuff by today's standards, but it was lots of fun, and we LEARNED from our daily 15-minute song sessions.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, the Golden Book contained two very different numbers –– "Solomon Levi" and "A Spanish Cavalier." The book told us these two songs could be sung simultaneously to good effect. Well the BOYS were assigned Solomon Levi and the GIRLS A Spanish Cavalier, and by Golly with just a little practice we were singing the two songs together like a bunch of pros! Pretty thrilling for a class of nine-year-olds!
A small thing, but significant in that it proved to be a good foundation for a later understanding of COUNTERPOINT.
After decades as a professionally trained musician I'm a bit ashamed of myself that it never occurred to me that DIXIE is a natural counterpoint to YANKEE DOODLE.
I guess it takes real genius like Chet Atkins to figure things like that out all by yourself.

DeleteIf you get bored out of your mind sometime and are into a long vid, Here's a tribute to Chet with some of those he inspired - there were thousands. Everyone who picked up a guitar in the 1960's knew who Chet was.
