Like USA Admiral I always had a keen interest in astronomy since my earliest days. I lived on the campus of USM as a small boy, my parents were professors there, and I would often get to go to various classes and had excess to what were large telescopes for that area and time.
My wife and I own an 8" Celestron telescope but haven't been away from the city light pollution in decades. That's the biggest scope I've peered through. All we can pick up is the Orion Nebula and some planets from time to time. They say if you can't see the Milky Way, you aren't going to get much through your telescope..
I do enjoy looking at the big picture. It's a nice mental break from all the stuff going on here. On my right sidebar as Daily Big Picture, which is the Astronomy Picture of the Day site.
Anyway, I try to keep it eclectic and on the positive.
off thread- ie: GOLD- a gold in the hand is worth two in the bush - I say- so - which gold Company sends REAL gold --that I can touch...because- I am considering gold as an investment- as to precious stones-they can be manufactured - however- the REAL ones have imperceptible flaws and - as an artist- I say - that is what makes them valuable... Your turn - BTW- the stars and nebula configuration are treasures too- too bad we can not invest in them Carol-CS
Hi Kid! Your space universe photo's never fail to amaze. It's wondrous the beauty God has created in the heavens for us to enjoy. This one looks like a puzzle within a puzzle, a new realm to visit after the outer one.
Carol-CS, I must admit to not being an expert in physical gold,, but this is the extent of what I do know: -Physical gold is considered a collectible and will be taxed more when you sell it. That includes the GLD Exchange Trade Fund. -I believe any reputable company like Gold Line, will send real gold at whatever refinement that they claim. ie. 99.999% pure -If the nasty government decides to confiscate gold as they did in the 30's, gold coins may be immune as they were immune then. Of course confiscate means they pay you market value for it - with paper. - Some physical gold is more valuable than other. Krugerrands are more valuable than Joe's 99.999% pure gold ingots of the same weight for example.
As far as predicting I sure don't feel very comfortable saying gold is going to extend a lot further. Gold had gotten to bubble status recently around $1900, has pulled back and will either breakdown or resume another longish uptrend. And I've read everything from gold $10,000/oz to Gold $600, from respectable professional people.
Good Luck! I trade the miners. The safest way to do that is by trading/investing in the GDX which is an index of the senior gold miners (just like DOW is the 30 industrials), or the GDXJ which is the junior miners.
But here is an interesting factoid I read recently. The Gold Miners topped out 22 months After the physical gold topped out in the 1980 time frame. Interesting.
Carol-CS, Yes I agree on the stones. Art with the value in the eye of the buyer.
And on the space photos from APOD, I don't usually like to keep posting the same kind of thing but they've been putting up some really super stuff. It is really amazing what is out there.
Astronomy has always astounded me.
ReplyDeleteAdmiral, yea, geez, we haven't see the half of it. Or the 1/100000000th of it for that matter

Hi Bunni, I couldn't agree more.
ReplyDeleteAmazing.
Aaaaah. Quite attractive. I wonder if our progeny will ever visit someday.
ReplyDeleteOpus, I believe if we are ever able to travel to the closest star(same crew), we'll be able to travel to them all.
