Tommy !!

Even at an early age, Tommy shows he is the best ever.

Notice he actually tunes the guitar 4 or more times while belting this one out.

If you'd like to learn how to play this..

  1. Maybe duck will have some educational comments to Tommy for his playing style.

  2. Another Beatles interpretation

I prefer Frisell because he doesn't constantly scream "look at me". There's some subtlety to his playing.

In the end what survives is melody -- Sonny Rollins

    2. Poor pretentious, dilettantiish Ducky, –– who never fails to mistake condescension for erudition, –– apparently has never learned that comparisons are almost invariably odious.

He also seems never to have learnt that one may have preferences without hurling verbal darts and rancorous epithets at others in the same field.

I, for instance, enjoy spending lots of time listening to dozens of the various contestants in the International Chopin competition each play the SAME piece. I hasve ;earned and performed most of this repertoire, myself, over a sixty-five year period, so I believe I know what I'm hearing.

Well, I am deighted at the very high level pf sheer COMPETENCE each contestant displays under extreme pressure. ALL of them are very good. HOWEVER there ARE subtle differences in the way each approaches the SAME piece, and some are dcidedly more appealing than others.

In classial music there is no "improvisation," no "arrangements" –– we must do our best to play everything written in the score EXACTLY as written to the greatest extent possible, BUT it's never boring, because the Human Element makes itself felt to every listener who knows and loves the music.

Listenng for these subtle differences makes hearing the same piece laed over and over again in different hands infinitely fascinating –– if you like that sort of thing.

Jazz and "Pop" music is different, because there the emphasis is on the uniqueness of each performer's "arrangements" of a given tune.

Tommy is really a great JAZZ musician though he's billed a something more versatile than that.

    3. Tommy is a jazz player? That;s probably even news to him.

I picked Frisell because he covers a number of Beatles' tunes and with more feeling than Emmanuel.

Tommy Emmanuel is a talented guitar player but to call him one of the great talents of the 20th century as you have is problematic. It leaves no room for true greatness.

    4. Franco, I don't know a lot of piano players, but Victor Borge can really put out a piece when being serious, and I do like This Player.

    9. Odd you find Frisell boring. I'd say the same about Emmanuel.
His main schtick is to jack up the tempo, state the melody without much feeling and then throw in a short cadenza (for lack of a better word since FreeThinke says there is no improv in classical music). Wash rinse repeat with plenty of room for yawns and no extended theme.
I'll admit that his version of Michelle is better than most of his stuff.

Like contemporary action films he's flash and no substance. Relies a lot on the musical equivalent of what I call attention deficit disorder editing. He knows his audience. Not to say he doesn't have talent but he plays down to his audience.

    10. This is why his 300 shows a year are always sold out you moron. You're probably even a Picasso fan. Lol.

Ok duck, off you go to some Otis Redding. lol

    11. See, I showed you that Tommy was great at Jazz after your stupid comment. Did you address that? Fuck no. Just like a stupid communist libtard piece of shit, you deflect. It's all you assholes know how to do :). Rock on you moron. Trump for 5.5 more years princess. God, I hope you and all those like you wake up every day in literal physical pain. lol.

Hopefully, you'll never get a reply form me again. I actually think you assholes spend your time on the internet trying to get the discipline your mommy never gave you. Well, I'm not interested.

His main purpose in living is to IRK, BELITTLE, DEFAME and EMISERATE t the greatest extent possible .

      In otjer words he's a PAIN-in-the-ASS.

    14. Franco, I laugh at him, occasionally engage for laughs. I peg him as having a mental disease and of being a dumbass. Remember the stupider they are the more they think they are geniuses.

  3. I started to listen at 5:20 AM, and all I could think was, "What a great way to start a new day!"

These vids must hve been made quite a few years ago, because Tommy looks a lot younger than he does today.

Couldn't have been much more than forty, if that.

    Am I right?

    1. 30's - 40's at most. He started at 6 and was playing Chet Atkins stuff at 10.

  4. I really enjoyed the "INSTRUCTION" video. I found it reassuring, because the methods Tommy applies to mastering a new piece are EXACTLY what we classical musicians must do to get good results.

Of course, Tommy demonstrates his approach with complete control and effortless ease. No hemming and hawing.

Most of us have to work at building difficult passages "brick by brick." A few notes at a time, very slow at first, then GRADUALLY build up speed. I sometimes start at the end and work backwards. The point is to be very PRECISE and not mve on till you can do whatever you're doing with complete ease before attempting to put it all together and then buid up speed.

Tommy, of course is a genus, so it probably desn't take him all that long once he's decided exactly what he wants to do.

TOMMY, by the way, has THE best command of RHYTHM I've ever heard.

As I said yesterday, every ATOM of Tommy's being is competely involved and perfectly synchronized with whatever he plays.

    1. Yes Franco, For a while now he improvises effortlessly. As he says sometimes "I can hardly wait to hear it myself". With a difficult tune, no doubt it is still brick by brick.
